NETWORK SOUTHCENTRAL

ROLLING STOCK

Class 313/2

The trains were refurbished for East Coastway service Brighton - Eastbourne/
Lewes and West Coastway Brighton - Worthing services.

Southern Class 313/2 Refurbishment

* Application of a slightly revised Southern livery featuring coastway branding and pictograms
* Removal of pantograph from middle trailer vehicle
* Replacement of vinyl flooring with carpets - a first for PEP design trains!
* New dado side panels and repainted wall ends
* Repaint of doorway vestibule areas
* Replacement of existing low back seats in the 2+3 layout with high back seats in the 2+2 layout with seat moquette trim in Southern colours
* All overhead luggage rack tips painted
* Installation of ceiling mounted LED Passenger Information Displays

The refurbishment work took place at both Railcare Wolverton Works and Wabtec Doncaster Works.

Each Class 313 EMU train is powered by eight GEC G310AZ traction motors.

Class 319/2

These former Brighton Express Class 319/2 EMUs (319214 - 319220) that were extensively refurbished for connex South Central's
prestigious 'connex express' service between London Victoria - East Croydon - Brighton (50 minute journey time).

The refurbishment included the following:
* Regeared traction motors for 100 MPH running on third rail

* Fully carpeted throughout
* New dado side panels and repainted wall end coverings
* Installation of Chapman bespoke high back seats to the 2+2 layout
* Installation of a buffet counter and snug area within the MSO vehicle
* Replacement of one standard toilet with a wheelchair accessible toilet
* Installation of a large First Class cabin with MTB seats to the 2+1 layout

The refurbishment work took place at Railcare Wolverton Works. When connex lost the franchise to Go Via,
they created Southern Railway and the seven EMU trains returned to Railcare Wolverton for a further refit into their colours.

Gatwick Express 442 Refurbishment

* Application of Gatwick Express livery
* New carpet trim throughout
* Installation of vertical luggage stacks
* The creation of a new First Class saloon in the Motor Brake vehicle with new seats arranged to the 2+1 layout
* Installation of new bespoke, high back seats to the 2+2 layout in Standard Class
* Installation of ceiling mounted LED passenger information displays

​They were built 1988/89 at BREL Derby.

Class 455

* New dado side panels and repainted wall ends
* Repaint of doorway vestibule areas
* Replacement of existing low back seats with high back seats
* Installation of wheelchair parking area in the TSO vehicle
* Installation of new grab poles
* Installation of ceiling mounted LED Passenger Information Displays
* Improved interior saloon lighting diffusers

Southern First Series Class 455/8 Metro EMU train second revamp
The revamp consisted of an exterior relivery into Southern livery, new vinyl flooring
and additional extra 'gym style' stanchions by the vestibule doorways.

Each Class 455 EMU train is powered by four English Electric EE507 traction motors.

Class 456

Southern Class 456 Refurbishment

* Application of Southern livery
* Replacement of lino flooring with ‘easy to clean’ vinyl flooring
* Repainted grab poles and seat top hand grips
* Retrimmed seat moquette into new moquette trim
* New dado side panels and repainted wall ends
* The toilet was removed from DTSO vehicle and replaced by wheelchair parking place
* All overhead luggage rack tips painted
* Installation of ceiling mounted LED Passenger Information Displays

All twenty four members of the Class 456 have been cascaded/transferred to South West Trains,
following the delivery of twenty six brand new five carriage length Bombardier Class 377/6 Electrostars.

There are forty six First Series Class 455/8 Metro EMU trains (455801 – 455846)
and they were built by  BREL York 1982 – 1984. They were refurbished by Alstom Eastleigh Works between 2003 - 2005.  

There are seven Class 319/2 EMU trains (319213 - 319220)
and they were built by BREL York 1987 - 1988 as Class 319/0.
They were refurbished by Railcare Wolverton Works for Connex for use on their Brighton Express service during 1997.
 
There are twenty four Class 456 Metro EMU trains (456001 – 456024)
and they were built by BREL York 1990 – 1991.
They were refreshed in house at Selhurst Depot.
